The US Food and Drug Administration is advising pet owners not to feed Nature’s Deli Chicken Jerky Dog Treats to their pets because the dog treats may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The chicken jerky dog treats are made, packaged and distributed in the US by Kasel Associated Industries Inc., although the company has declined to voluntarily recall the products at this time. The company says it is working with FDA and has removed all affected products from store shelves.
Nature's Deli Chicken Jerky Dog Treats were sold in 3-lb. packages, marked with lot code BESTBY061913DEN on the back side of the packaging. The treats were sold at Costco stores in the Denver, Colorado, USA, area.
In September, a retail sample of a Kasel dog treat product tested by the Colorado Department of Agriculture was found to be positive for Salmonella. An FDA follow-up inspection at the company found certain finished dog treat products and 34 out of 72 environmental samples positive for Salmonella. The company recalled one lot of its Nature’s Deli Chicken Jerky Dog Treats on October 2, although the recall was not extended to the lot code covered by FDA's warning. In November, a retail sample of Nature’s Deli Chicken Jerky Dog Treats lot code BESTBY061913DEN taken by the Colorado Department of Agriculture also tested positive for Salmonella.
FDA has not received any reports of illnesses associated with these treats.
