Watt Publishing Co.'s Top Petfood Companies Database, compiled by Petfood Industry and WATT Research, provides data on more than 115 petfood manufacturers and marketers from around the world. The data includes company headquarters, types of products produced, main brands, annual revenue and volume, number of employees, plants and facilities and other information about each company.

The database is searchable by specific company name, geographic markets served or key product categories. Currently most of the data is from 2011, the most recent year for which full, complete data is available. For the 10 largest companies by annual revenue, data is also available for 2010. Data for 2012, as well as other updates, is being added on an ongoing basis.

For those seeking  a rough overview of the global petfood industry based on available data, the Top Petfood Companies Database can provide information such as numbers of employees and facilities around the world (see Figure 1). Based on the data on hand for 47% of the 118 companies in the database, for example, there were 76,456 people employed globally in the petfood industry in 2011. Two-thirds of those employees worked for the top two companies, Mars Petcare and Nestle Purina PetCare.

Mars Petcare also had the largest number of production plants worldwide, according to the data-63 out of 294 owned by companies in the database. The total number of facilities owned by companies in the database came to 262 in 2011.

Geographical data, such as  where top companies in the industry are headquartered (see Figure 2), can also   be found in the Top Petfood Companies database. In 2011, 44% of the companies that reported their headquarter locations were based in North America. Another 22% were based in Western Europe, while nearly 14% hailed out of the Asia Pacific region.

Top petfood company plant locations by region data is also available, with 87% of companies from 2011 reporting on the number of production plants and where to find them (see Figure 4). As might be expected, the vast majority of those plants-164 of 294-were located in North America, where company headquarters could be found. Another 63 were in Western Europe and 37 more plants were located in Latin America, according to available data.

The global petfood industry's  growth can be seen in the Top Petfood Companies Database through information such as where top companies do business (see Figure 3). It truly is a global industry, with every region getting solid service in 2011-while the top markets served were North America, the Asia Pacific and Western Europe (61, 55 and 54 companies, respectively), Eastern Europe and Latin America were also well covered (by 35 and 33 companies, respectively). Australasia and the Middle East/Africa were served by 27 companies each in 2011, according to available data.
