Based in India, global packaging company UFlex has announced plans to develop a new manufacturing facility in Mexico focused on producing woven polypropylene (WPP) bags for the pet food sector. The initiative is in response to growing demand across North and South America and reflects a broader industry shift toward regional production and supply chain efficiency.

Backed by a $50 million investment, the facility is expected to begin operations during the 2025–2026 fiscal year. Once operational, it will have the capacity to produce up to 80 million WPP bags annually. Designed for dry pet food, these bags are valued for their strength, moisture resistance, and resealability — attributes that help preserve product quality and extend shelf life.

The decision to establish operations in Mexico aligns with UFlex’s projection that the pet food market across the Americas could reach $135 billion by 2030. By locating production closer to key markets, the company aims to reduce logistics costs, improve delivery times, and offer greater flexibility in packaging design for local clients.

While the exact location of the new facility has not been confirmed, UFlex already maintains a presence in Mexico through its plant in Altamira, Tamaulipas. Operating since 2009, the Altamira facility produces BOPET films and may serve as a support hub for the new operation.

Sustainability and regional responsiveness

The upcoming plant will also prioritize sustainable packaging solutions. The WPP bags manufactured at the site will be fully recyclable and designed to meet evolving regulatory and consumer expectations around packaging waste and environmental impact. UFlex has stated it will continue investing in materials innovation and recycling systems as part of its broader sustainability strategy.

The facility will produce both standard and customized packaging formats to meet a variety of branding and distribution needs within the pet food industry.

This expansion supports ongoing trends in decentralized manufacturing, localized sourcing, and environmentally responsible production. As the pet food sector continues to evolve — particularly in packaging performance and sustainability — UFlex’s new facility is positioned to serve emerging demands across the region.
