Germany is home to some of the largest pet populations in Europe. The European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF) reported 10,600,000 pet dogs and 15,200,000 pet cats in Germany.

In 2023, the German pet care market rose to a record height of 7 billion Euros (US$7.55 billion), according to sessions and press conferences during Interzoo 2024. Pet food sales accounted for more than half of the total, reaching 4.495 billion Euros (US$4.85 billion) in brick-and-mortar outlets. Online pet care sales reached 1.316 billion Euros (US$1.42 billion), although this figure wasn’t divided into product categories.

This year has seen some business movement in the German pet food industry. The VAFO Group, a leading European pet food manufacturer, has completed the acquisition of the remaining stake in the German family-run business, Allco Tiernahrung. Westfleisch, Germany's second largest meat marketer, expands its range of pet food products with the acquisition of The Petfood Company.
