New European petfood legislation: Mind the language
While the impact of the new European regulations on what must be declared on a petfood label is easy to see, it may not be so obvious that their approval has also led to the establishment of a specific compliant terminology to be used in some of the label sections. Using other terms will result in wrong labeling, which can have consequences in terms of both time (negotiation with national authorities) and money (fines) (Meyer, 2013).

FDA to change proposed preventive-control human food safety rules under FSMA
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced it is planning major changes to its proposed produce and preventive-control rules for human food as part of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). Provisions to be changed include those regarding water quality standards and testing, raw manure and compost, mixed-use facilities and exemptions for certain farms, the agency said.

Media perpetuating petfood safety myths, misconceptions
Another day/month/year, another media report on petfood safety with misleading, out-of-context or downright inaccurate information. Since the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released the proposed preventive control rule for animal feed (including petfood) in late October as part of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), it's been big news throughout mainstream media. Unfortunately, it's difficult to see how some of the news being disseminated is at all helpful to pet owners, let alone the petfood industry.

FDA releases sixth proposed rule under FSMA
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on December 20 released the sixth rule pertaining to the Food Safety Modernization Act. The proposed rule, Focused Mitigation Strategies to Protect Food against Intentional Adulteration, would require registered domestic and foreign food facilities to address hazards that may be intentionally introduced by acts of terrorism.

Petfood industry can help shape FSMA preventive control rule
While the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) overall and, specifically, its recently proposed preventive control rule for animal feed represent a paradigm shift in how petfood will be regulated, the petfood industry has a rare -- if rushed -- opportunity to have a say in how the final rule will read. Yes, believe it or not, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) wants your input.

FSMA proposed rule and the petfood industry
The latest proposed rule of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) has the petfood industry's full attention, bringing concerns and critiques from all corners. The rule, "Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventative Controls for Food for Animals," is meant to focus on preventing problems in order to improve the safety of food for animals, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Food Safety Modernization Act update
In October, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed new regulations to implement aspects of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) for animal feeds (including petfoods), similar to those proposed for foods for human consumption earlier this year. The law, enacted in 2011, addresses sweeping changes to regulation of food for both man and other animals, including the establishment of preventive controls, improved inspection and response capabilities, improved oversight of imports, and enhanced partnerships with domestic and international regulatory bodies.

Petfood not a factor after all in latest non-GMO legislative failure
A ballot initiative to require many foods and beverages that contain genetically modified ingredients sold in the state of Washington to carry labels failed to pass during November 5 elections, with 55% of voters opposed to the measure. Though earlier news reports claimed petfood was being used as an example by both supporters and opponents of the initiative, petfood-related debates seemed to fade down the stretch, replaced by arguments over cost, health benefits and labeling of human foods. And unlike with a similar proposed law in California last year that was also defeated, petfood industry organizations appeared not to engage in the Washington battle with either words or money.
