NASDA approves AAFCO regulations

The regulations encourage transparency in pet food labels.

The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) announces its endorsement of the Association of American Feed Control Officials’ (AAFCO) Model Regulations for Pet Food and Specialty Pet Food at the 2024 Winter Policy Conference.

The resolution encourages swift adoption of AAFCO's model regulations by state feed regulatory programs overseeing pet food, promoting uniformity and transparency in pet food labels. NASDA President Blayne Arthur emphasizes the importance of clear labels for informed pet ownership, expressing commitment to a seamless transition with respect to individual state legal authorities and processes.

NASDA assures enforcement discretion in the review of pet food labels, prioritizing a consistent approach nationwide. The association looks forward to collaborating with AAFCO and industry representatives in achieving this goal.

AAFCO, in collaboration with stakeholders since 2015, has modernized pet food labeling regulations to enhance consumer understanding. With the recent approval of Model Regulations for Pet Food and Specialty Pet Food, a six-year grace period has been established for states to implement regulations in line with their rule-making processes.

NASDA underscores its support for this grace period, aiming for a smooth industry transition to the new labeling standards. The Association of American Feed Control Officials is an NASDA affiliate.
