AAFCO Pet Food Committee seeking public comments

The Copper Claim Workgroup is seeking input on a proposed "Controlled Copper" claim for dog food.

The AAFCO Pet Food Committee (PFC) Copper Claim Workgroup is inviting public comments on a proposed "Controlled Copper" claim for dog food until March 1, 2024.

The suggested claim ensures nutritional adequacy for one or more life stages, with specified limits of 15 mg copper/kg DM and 3.75 mg copper/1000 kcal of metabolizable energy. The Workgroup's recommendation aims to enhance consumer clarity, market consistency, and support animal health.

Initiated in February 2021 following concerns raised in a JAVMA article, the Workgroup addresses insufficient data on safe copper levels in dog food. Dr. Karen L. Donnelly, Workgroup Chair, emphasized the need for further research while deciding on the proposed regulation.

Stakeholders, including veterinarians and consumer groups, are encouraged to review the final report and submit comments via email to [email protected] with the subject line "Copper Claim Workgroup Comment" by March 1, 2024.
