Joint petfood, feed meeting addresses upcoming FSMA preventive control rule
Petfood and feed industry experts speaking at the 2013 Feed and Pet Food Joint Conference [link] September 24-26 discussed elements and challenges of the preventive control rule for feed soon to be released under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). Participants in the conference, presented in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, by the Pet Food Institute and National Grain & Feed Association, also heard from a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about the rule.

AFIA announces change to third-party petfood safety certification programs
The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) announced a change to several of AFIA’s third-party certification programs. Starting in October, the administration of the Safe Feed/Safe Food Certification Program, Pet Food Manufacturing Facility Certification Program and Pet Food Ingredient Facility Certification Program will be handled by the Safe Quality Food Institute (SQFI).

Petfood executives urge industry to share food safety practices, contact lawmakers
"Food safety is not proprietary," declared Mike Hayes, director of food safety and quality for Del Monte and a speaker during "Petfood Insights: New Approaches to Quality & Technology." The symposium took place September 10-11 in Memphis, Tennessee, USA (yes, Elvis was sighted) and was hosted by Kemin.

AAFCO holds annual meeting in Florida
The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) held its annual meeting August 13-15 in St. Pete Beach, Florida, USA. Perhaps the biggest announcement at the meeting was the introduction of an online version of the AAFCO Official Publication.

FDA issues guidance to industry on preparation, submission of food additive petitions
The US Food and Drug Administration issued its guidance to industry for preparation and submission of food additive petitions. The FDA Guidance for Industry document 221 is titled, Recommendations for Preparation and Submission of Animal Food Additive Petitions.

Next FSMA Friday from SafetyChain Software to be held September 27
SafetyChain Software's continues to host its FSMA Fridays series with Dr. David Acheson and his team, which most recently focused on the Foreign Supplier Verification Programs for Importers of Food for Humans and Animals and Proposed Rule on Accreditation of Third Party Auditors on August 23. Due to the high level of interest and information surrounding these two important topics, the discussion will continue during FSMA Fridays' next session on September 27.

No further FDA extensions allowed on FSMA deadlines, judge rules
The US Food and Drug Administration can no longer extend deadlines on releasing policies mandated by the Food Safety Modernization Act, according to a judge's ruling in the US District Court of Northern California. In the Center for Food Safety's lawsuit, originally filed in August 2012, Judge Phyllis Hamilton sided with the Center for Food Safety in her ruling against FDA over FSMA deadlines, which were originally ordered by Congress to be completed in July 2012.

FDA extends comment periods on two proposed FSMA rules
FDA issued Federal Register notices to extend the comment periods on the proposed rules for Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Human Food, and Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption for 60 additional days until November 15. This is the second and final extension of the comment period for these two rules, part of the Food Safety Modernization Act.

Human food trend that petfood should not follow: ignoring FSMA
Since the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was signed into law in January 2011, I have seen reactions in our industry ranging from approval to grudging acceptance to complaints to anxiety. I have even heard anecdotes about a few, mainly smaller petfood or treat manufacturers who say they do not have the time or resources to comply with the law and its regulations, so they plan to just ignore it.

‘Made in USA’ claims: What’s required for petfood products?
To appeal to the concerns of many petfood purchasers in the US, the claim "Made in USA" or similar verbiage, often accompanied by a depiction of the American flag, is not uncommon on petfood labels these days. Neither the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) nor the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) has any regulations or expressed policies regarding use of the claim.

FDA to issue new 'Salmonella in Food for Animals' Compliance Policy Guide
On July 16 in its Federal Register, the US Food and Drug Administration issued a new Compliance Policy Guide for Salmonella in Food for Animals. The Compliance Policy Guide "provides guidance to FDA staff on Salmonella-contaminated food for animals."
