FDA can no longer delay on petfood safety regulations
The wheels of justice turn slowly, as the saying goes, but they have finally turned in the direction toward safer petfood, animal feed and human food -- and toward clarity for producers of those products. On June 21, a US federal court ordered the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to complete the new food safety regulations of the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) by November 30 of this year.

Raw petfood: Is it safe enough?
The discussions both for and against a raw petfood diet are long-familiar to the industry. Proponents cite unmatched health benefits for pets and the way the diet simulates how animals would eat in the wild; while detractors point out the risk of pet illness, contamination and public health issues if proper food safety measures aren't taken.

FDA to investigate Salmonella in petfood
As the moderator for the sessions on petfood safety at the 2013 Petfood Forum, I can say without fear of contradiction that Salmonella control was a very hot topic. Multiple speakers addressed the subject, and the information conveyed to the manufacturers in the audience was indeed timely.

Consumer call for pet retailers to post petfood, treat recall warning signs
After a number of voluntary recalls of chicken jerky pet treats made in China, pet owners are asking retailers for accountability in warning consumers of products recalled or thought to be potentially harmful by the Food and Drug Administration. As part of the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act, retailers are required to display visible warning signs at their registers when FDA identifies a "reportable food" for people or animals that could "cause serious, adverse health consequences or death."

FSMA means ‘seismic shift’ in food and petfood safety
Ever since the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was signed into law in January 2011, we have heard that it represents the most significant change to US food safety law for decades, or variations on that theme. I’ve seen descriptions ranging from “fundamental overhaul” to “historic revolution.” For the petfood industry, one reason FSMA signals such a substantial change is that for the first time, many food safety regulations and practices that have been required of human food will now also apply to animal feed (including petfood).

Delay in petfood safety rules leads to FDA hand slap
If a recent US federal court ruling has any impact, we might soon, finally, see new petfood preventive controls safety regulations under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). In the ruling, issued April 22, the court said the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must comply with a schedule set forth by Congress under FSMA to issue new regulations in seven key areas, including risk-based preventive controls.

Court rules FDA failed to comply with FSMA rulemaking schedule
On April 22, a Federal Court sided with two nonprofit organizations when it ruled that the US Food and Drug Administration failed to comply with the Food Safety Modernization Act's mandatory rulemaking schedule. After failing to meet a July 2012 deadline that required FDA to promulgate seven new regulations covering extensive food safety topics, the Center for Food Safety and the Center for Environmental Health filed a complaint against FDA in the US Federal District Court for Northern California.
