Grain experts say a toxic mold residue that attacked the 2012 US corn crop may become even more problematic this summer and fall as farmers blend off tainted corn supplies from storage. This is a concern in the petfood industry as manufacturers work to avoid contamination in their final products and minimize petfood recalls due to aflatoxin.

AFIA to host feed safety, quality assurance protocols course online
To help petfood and animal feed industries prepare for and respond to the upcoming Food Safety Modernization Act, the American Feed Industry Association and Kansas State University are offering a new online course. The course, AFIA 520 - Advanced Feed Safety and Quality Assurance Protocols, aims to provide training and understanding of the industry’s increasingly complex requirements for quality and safety.

Investigation into counterfeit brand petfood sales in China underway
A business in China suspected of selling counterfeit brand-name petfood online is now being investigated by a quality-control group in Shanghai, China. The Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision began its investigation in February after receiving a report that a store on taobao.com was selling counterfeit brand-name cat and dog food for two years, with monthly sales of nearly 10,000 yuan (US$1,612).

Researchers share latest on mycotoxins in animal feed
With nearly 500 known mycotoxins, interactions between toxins can make diagnosis difficult, and it can be further complicated by the presence of masked mycotoxins in animal feed. These complications can lead to an underestimation of certain mycotoxins by up to 88 percent, explaining why analyzed animal feed can show low levels of mycotoxins but still be problematic, according to research presented at Alltech's first North American Mycotoxin Management Summit in Lexington, Kentucky, USA.

The importance of mycotoxin management in dog food
While the potential for recalls due to contaminated product is not new, they remind members of the petfood industry of the need for an integrated mycotoxin management plan to keep mycotoxins at bay. In 2012, the US corn harvest presented challenges for the country's farmers. In spite of testing every load coming in and rejecting many of them, some of the end products were tainted with aflatoxin, a naturally occurring poison that can cause serious illness or even death if consumed.

Dead dogs used as petfood fat, protein in Spain, reports say
A criminal gang in Spain reportedly used the bodies of dogs and other animals from animal sanctuaries, vets, zoos and farms to process as protein and fats that could be used in petfood and animal feed, according to laboratory tests of commercial petfood in Spain. In 2012, Spanish police discovered a warehouse containing 15 metric tons of dead, stray dogs in the town of As Neves, Galicia, as well as similar warehouses in Northern Spain.

Produce Traceability Initiative to comment on FDA product tracing pilot report
The Produce Traceability Initiative, designed to help the produce industry maximize the effectiveness of current traceback procedures, is currently developing a response to the Institute of Food Technologists’ 10 recommendations released by the Food and Drug Administration in the document, entitled, Pilot Projects for Improving Product Tracing along the Food Supply System Final Report. The Produce Traceability Initiative and its four administering organizations (Canadian Produce Marketing Association, GS1 US, Produce Marketing Association and United Fresh Produce Association) will work to collect industry feedback and commentary on each of the 10 recommendations outlined in the report.

New calorie regulations approved by Association of American Feed Control Officials
The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) held its "mid-year" meeting January 22-24 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. By far the biggest news was the vote in the General Session to approve the proposed changes to AAFCO Model Regulation PF9 that would require calorie content statements on ALL (not just "lite" and "reduced calorie") dog and cat food labels.

AFIA Pet Food Conference draws 25 percent higher attendance in 2013
The American Feed Industry Association hosted its annual Pet Food Conference, along with the Poultry Protein & Fat Council, at the International Production and Processing Expo, drawing 25 percent higher attendance than in 2012. The day-long conference featured a variety of experts discussing topics impacting today’s petfood and petfood ingredient manufacturer.

FDA reorganizes Foods and Veterinary Medicine program
The US Food and Drug Administration has reorganized the Foods and Veterinary Medicine program, FDA recently announced in its Federal Register. As part of the reorganization, completed in October 2012, the Office of Foods was renamed the Office of Foods and Veterinary Medicine, led by deputy commissioner for foods and veterinary medicine, Michael Taylor.

The Deloitte Center for the Global Food Value Chain recently debuted as a source of insights and analysis designed to help companies in the food industry understand the changing regulatory environment, reduce risk and address supply chain issues. Along with its debut, the Center issued a series of research papers to help companies comprehend and comply with the Food Safety Modernization Act.
