NASC reveals new study

Research focuses on CBD products in healthy dogs.

The National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) reveals the publication of a first-of-its-kind safety study of cannabidiol (CBD) products in healthy dogs by Frontiers in Veterinary Science. The study demonstrates that various cannabinoids, including CBD, are well-tolerated in healthy dogs over 90 days, with no significant risks at a daily dose of 5mg/kg body weight. NASC President Bill Bookout emphasizes the study's comprehensive nature, combining a well-designed protocol with a decade of post-market surveillance data from the NASC Adverse Event Reporting Database (NAERS).

Key Findings:

  • Different cannabinoids are safe for long-term use in healthy dogs at studied doses
  • NASC's safety study is the most comprehensive, combining a controlled protocol with a decade of post-market surveillance data
  • No significant risks observed at a daily dose of 5mg/kg body weight

Study Details:

  • 32 healthy beagle dogs participated in the study
  • Treatment groups included a control (placebo) and various CBD formulations
  • CBD, CBD + CBG, and CBD + CBDA were well-tolerated over the 90-day study period

NASC President Bill Bookout acknowledges the pivotal contributions of the NASC board of directors, NASC members, retailers and veterinarians in advancing this landmark study. Special thanks are extended to study co-authors Margitta Dziwenka, Kaiti Valm, Jennifer Kovacs-Nolan and Joseph J. Wakshlag, DVM, PhD, of the Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine.
